Soccer History

Soccer is perhaps one of the oldest game in the history of the world. A game played primarily with the feet, which boils down to just a few simple rules; its simplicity is what makes soccer so resilient and popular. Unlike other major sports like football, baseball or tennis, soccer requires very little special equipment. All that a person needs is a ball and a foot. Many forms of soccer have dotted the historical record of World History. There are variations of modern day soccer that were played in China in the 2nd and 3rd century BC. Medieval Europeans played variations of modern day soccer. Soccer’s simplicity helps it translate across international borders. Few complicated rules, little necessary equipment and teams that can grow and contract based on need have allowed soccer to span the ages and become one of the most popular sports in world history.

Modern day professional soccer, which forms the basis for many soccer games played today, is based on rules and online games created in England in the mid-nineteenth century. Although not adopted by the world immediately, the Cambridge Rules eventually became the foundation for the soccer games we see today. A Football Association was created in the mid 19th century to help govern soccer rules and games from a central governing authority. By 1913 FIFA or the Federation Internationale de Football Association became the governing body for soccer.

In the United States the term football describes a vastly different game than what football describes in Europe, South America and the rest of the world. In many cases the terms are differentiated by calling football games in the United States as “American Football.” The term “Soccer” in the rest of the world is not used. Instead most other countries call “Soccer” by the name “Football” or “Futbol.” For the purposes of this article, the term “Soccer” will be used.
